"PDP Authentication Failure" error explained
"PDP Authentication Failure" means your phone has registered on the cellular network (you have signal) but can't establish a data session. The access point name (APN) credentials aren't being accepted. The eSIM itself is installed correctly; the issue is in the data layer above the SIM. Fixes in order: enable Data Roaming for the Eflexsim line, restart the phone, manually enter the APN from your activation email, and if all else fails, reinstall the eSIM with a fresh QR.
Below: what PDP actually means in plain terms, why this error specifically appears, and the recovery steps for iPhone and Android.
What "PDP Authentication Failure" actually means
PDP stands for Packet Data Protocol. Telecom-speak for the data connection between your phone and the carrier's data network. When you open a website or app, your phone first authenticates with the cellular voice/SMS layer (succeeds. You see signal bars), then authenticates with the data layer (this is the PDP authentication).
If the PDP authentication fails, you have signal but no internet. Browsers timeout, apps show "no connection," and the iPhone or Android sometimes surfaces a notification with the literal text "PDP Authentication Failure."
The most common causes:
- Data Roaming disabled on the Eflexsim line.
- Wrong APN configured (manually entered with a typo, or auto-configured to your home carrier's APN instead of Eflexsim's).
- Carrier-side credentials hiccup. The partner network's data authentication server returned an error during the handshake.
- iOS or Android caching stale credentials after a SIM-related change.
Below: each cause and the fix.
Fix 1: Enable Data Roaming on the Eflexsim line
The most common cause. Even though Eflexsim is the carrier you bought specifically for your destination, your phone treats the partner network as "roaming" and refuses to start a data session unless Data Roaming is on.
On iPhone:
- Settings โ Cellular โ tap the Eflexsim line.
- Toggle Data Roaming to on.
On Android (Samsung):
- Settings โ Connections โ tap Eflexsim line.
- Toggle Data roaming to on.
On Android (Pixel):
- Settings โ Network & internet โ SIMs โ Eflexsim.
- Toggle Roaming on.
After enabling, restart the cellular connection: turn airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off. The PDP authentication should succeed within 30-60 seconds.
If you can confirm Data Roaming is on and the error persists, move to fix 2.
Fix 2: Manually enter the correct APN
The APN tells your phone where to authenticate for data. Eflexsim's eSIM profile usually sets this automatically during install, but older Android phones and some iPhones with caching issues may end up with the wrong APN.
Find your correct APN. Open your activation email. Look for "APN" or "Network settings" near the bottom. Eflexsim uses several different APN values depending on the partner network for your country. Common values include internet, data.smarter, eflexsim, and wbdata. Use the exact value from your email.
On iPhone:
- Settings โ Cellular โ tap Eflexsim line.
- Scroll to Cellular Data Network (if it appears).
- Enter the APN value in the APN field under "Cellular Data."
- Leave username and password blank unless your email specifies otherwise.
- Restart the iPhone.
If "Cellular Data Network" doesn't appear, iOS has locked APN editing for the Eflexsim profile. Email support@eflexsim.com. We can issue a profile with the APN pre-configured at the carrier level, bypassing the iOS lock.
On Android (Samsung):
- Settings โ Connections โ Mobile networks โ tap Eflexsim line.
- Tap Access Point Names.
- Tap + or Add APN.
- Enter the APN from your email. Leave other fields blank unless specified.
- Save and select the new APN.
On Android (Pixel):
- Settings โ Network & internet โ SIMs โ Eflexsim โ APN names.
- Tap + to add a new APN.
- Enter the APN value. Save and select.
For full APN entry detail, see how to manually set APN settings.
Fix 3: Restart the phone
If Data Roaming is on and the APN looks correct, a phone restart often clears stuck PDP state.
- Power off the phone fully.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Power on.
- Wait for both lines to reconnect.
- Open a browser or app to test data.
This works more often than you'd expect. iOS and Android both cache cellular state, and a restart forces a fresh authentication handshake.
Fix 4: Reset network settings
If the restart didn't help, resetting network settings can clear stuck credentials. Warning: this also resets saved Wi-Fi passwords, so make sure you have those written down.
On iPhone:
Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ Reset โ Reset Network Settings.
On Android (most):
Settings โ System โ Reset options โ Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
After the reset, reconnect to Wi-Fi, then try opening a website over the Eflexsim line.
Fix 5: Reinstall the eSIM with a fresh QR
Last resort. If the eSIM profile is fundamentally corrupted, a clean reinstall fixes it.
- Settings โ Cellular โ tap Eflexsim โ Remove eSIM (iPhone) or SIM manager โ Eflexsim โ Remove (Android).
- Email support@eflexsim.com for a fresh QR. Mention "PDP Authentication Failure after install" so we know what happened.
- We re-issue within 4 hours at no charge.
- Install the new QR per iPhone install or Android install.
When to suspect a carrier-side issue
If you've worked through all five fixes and PDP authentication still fails consistently, the issue may be on the partner network's side. Email support with:
- Your order number.
- Phone make, model, OS version.
- The specific error message text (screenshot it).
- The location/country you're in.
- Times of failed attempts.
We escalate to the partner network's technical team. Carrier-side PDP failures are usually resolved within 24 hours after escalation.
Frequently asked questions
QWill the plan timer start even though authentication keeps failing?
The timer starts on first successful network registration, which usually happens before the PDP authentication step. So yes, the timer typically starts even if data fails. If you've been stuck on PDP errors for hours and feel you've lost plan time unfairly, email support with the details. We may be able to credit back the lost period in extreme cases.
QDoes PDP Authentication Failure affect calls and SMS?
No. Calls and SMS use a different authentication layer (CS. Circuit-Switched). PDP only affects data. Voice and SMS continue working if your phone has those capabilities (Eflexsim is data-only, so neither applies for the Eflexsim line. But your home line's voice/SMS isn't affected by Eflexsim's PDP issue).
QMy iPhone shows the error briefly and then disappears, but data still doesn't work.
iOS sometimes shows the notification once and then suppresses repeats. The underlying authentication is still failing. You have signal but no data. The fix is the same: enable Data Roaming, check APN, restart.
QCan the APN be wrong if eSIM was installed automatically?
Rare but possible. Some Android manufacturers (older OnePlus, Oppo, certain regional Samsung builds) override the eSIM's APN with their carrier's default. Manual APN entry overrides this back. iPhones rarely have this issue.
QWhat if my activation email doesn't list an APN?
If the email is missing the APN section, email support@eflexsim.com and we'll send the right value for your specific plan. The APN varies by which partner network covers your country.
QWill the issue resolve on its own?
Sometimes. Carrier-side issues usually clear within a few hours. If you've made no settings changes and the error appeared mid-trip after working fine, waiting an hour and retrying is reasonable. If the issue persists past a few hours, work through the fixes above.
For broader signal issues, see my eSIM has no signal. For APN-specific guidance, see how to manually set APN settings.
