How to manually set APN settings (iOS and Android)

5 min readUpdated May 11, 2026Verified

In most cases, Eflexsim's eSIM profile sets the APN automatically during install. You don't need to touch this setting. APN (Access Point Name) is the address your phone uses to reach the cellular data network. If you've installed the eSIM, enabled data roaming, set Eflexsim as the data line, and you still have no internet, a missing or wrong APN is one of the rarer causes worth checking. The fix on iPhone is Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Eflexsim line โ†’ Cellular Data Network. On Android, the path varies but generally lives under SIM settings โ†’ Access Point Names.

Below: when APN actually matters, how to find the right value, and the step-by-step entry process for iPhone and Android.

When APN actually matters

In 2025, manual APN entry is rare. Eflexsim's eSIM profile contains APN configuration that your phone applies during install. The cases where you'd need to enter it by hand:

  • Older Android phones (especially OnePlus, Oppo, and pre-2022 Motorola) sometimes don't accept the auto-configured APN and fall back to a blank one.
  • Phones with carrier-customized firmware (some India-market Samsungs, some Honor, some Vivo) sometimes override the eSIM's APN with their carrier's default.
  • iPhones that have had a previous carrier's APN cached from a physical SIM that's since been removed.

If you have signal on the Eflexsim line (the carrier name shows in the status bar, bars are visible) but no data flows to Safari, Chrome, or any app, APN is one of the things to check. Other causes. Data roaming off, wrong data line, network registration issues. Are more common, so check those first via no signal troubleshooting.

Where to find the right APN value

The APN that Eflexsim uses for your specific country and partner network is in your activation email (under "Network settings" or "APN details," near the bottom). It varies. Different partner networks use different APN strings.

Common APN values for travel eSIMs:

  • internet (generic, used by many providers)
  • data.smarter (used by some Smart partners)
  • eflexsim (custom, sometimes used)
  • wbdata (Webbing partners)

Don't guess. Open the activation email and copy the exact value Eflexsim sent for your plan. The wrong APN will fail silently. You'll have signal but no internet, with no error message.

How to enter APN manually on iPhone

iOS doesn't allow editing the APN directly for most carriers. The field is locked. The path that works on most iPhones:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular.
  3. Tap the Eflexsim line under SIMs.
  4. Scroll down to Cellular Data Network.
  5. If this option doesn't appear, iOS has locked APN editing for your carrier. Skip to "If iOS hides Cellular Data Network" below.
  6. Enter the APN value from your activation email in the APN field under Cellular Data.
  7. Leave Username and Password blank unless your email specifies them (Eflexsim doesn't).
  8. Repeat the same APN value in LTE Setup (Optional) if you see that section, in the APN field.
  9. Tap back to save. iPhone applies the change automatically.

Restart the phone after entering APN. Sometimes iPhone needs a fresh boot to apply the new APN.

If iOS hides Cellular Data Network

Apple lets carriers disable the Cellular Data Network screen for certain SIMs. If your Eflexsim line doesn't show this option:

  • Try deleting and reinstalling the eSIM. Reinstall sometimes restores the APN-editing screen.
  • Email support@eflexsim.com. We can issue a profile with the APN pre-configured directly, which works around iOS's lockout.

How to enter APN manually on Android

Android exposes APN editing more openly than iOS, but the path varies by manufacturer.

Samsung Galaxy:

  1. Settings โ†’ Connections โ†’ Mobile networks.
  2. Tap the Eflexsim line at the top.
  3. Tap Access Point Names.
  4. Tap + (top right) or Add APN.
  5. Enter Name: "Eflexsim" (or anything memorable).
  6. Enter APN: the value from your activation email.
  7. Leave Username, Password, MMSC, and other fields blank unless your email specifies.
  8. Tap โ‹ฎ โ†’ Save.
  9. Back at the APN list, tap the radio button next to "Eflexsim" to select it.

Google Pixel:

  1. Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ SIMs.
  2. Tap the Eflexsim line.
  3. Tap APN names.
  4. Tap + at the top to add a new APN.
  5. Enter Name and APN (the APN value comes from your activation email).
  6. Save and select the new APN.

OnePlus, Motorola, Oppo, Sony:

Same general pattern. Settings โ†’ SIM cards or Mobile Network โ†’ tap the Eflexsim line โ†’ APN settings โ†’ add new. The exact menu names differ slightly.

What APN values typically include

A complete APN entry usually has:

  • Name: a label (anything; "Eflexsim" works).
  • APN: the access point address. This is the only required field for most travel eSIMs.
  • Proxy, Port: usually blank.
  • Username, Password: usually blank for Eflexsim.
  • Server: usually blank.
  • MMSC: blank (Eflexsim doesn't use MMS).
  • APN type: default or default, supl (varies by Android version).
  • APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6 (most modern Androids default to this; keep it).

If your activation email lists specific values for any of these, use those. If a field isn't mentioned, leave it blank.

What to do if the APN you entered still doesn't work

Run through this short checklist:

  1. Confirm you copied the APN exactly. Even a one-character typo breaks it.
  2. Confirm data roaming is on for the Eflexsim line.
  3. Confirm Eflexsim is the active data line.
  4. Restart the phone after entering APN. Some Androids need this.
  5. Try a different APN type. On Android, set APN type to default, supl, mms, hipri, fota,ia,cbs. That wide list covers most cases.

If after all of that the data still doesn't flow, the issue is probably not APN. See my eSIM has no signal for a broader troubleshooting flow.

Frequently asked questions

QWhy does my eSIM have an APN at all if it's all digital?

The APN is independent of the eSIM hardware. It's a network-level concept that applies to any cellular connection (physical SIM or eSIM). The partner carrier's APN tells your phone how to reach that carrier's data network gateway.

QCan the wrong APN damage my phone?

No. APN is a network configuration value. Setting it wrong means no internet, not a hardware issue. You can change it back at any time.

QDoes the APN change based on which country I'm in?

Not for Eflexsim plans. The APN is set by the eSIM profile and stays the same throughout the plan's validity. The underlying partner carrier may route you through different cell towers as you move, but the APN you entered doesn't change.

QMy phone never asked for APN during install. Is that normal?

Yes. The eSIM profile contains the APN, so most phones configure it automatically and don't prompt. You'd only need to enter it manually if something went wrong with the automatic setup.

QWhat if I have two eSIMs installed and they use different APNs?

Each eSIM has its own APN list, accessed through that specific line's settings. Setting APN on Eflexsim doesn't affect your home line's APN, and vice versa. Each line maintains its own configuration.

QWhere do I find the APN in my activation email?

It's usually near the bottom, under a heading like "Network settings" or "APN details." If you can't find it, search the email for "APN" or contact support@eflexsim.com and we'll send it.

For broader connectivity issues, see my eSIM has no signal. For install-time questions, see iPhone install or Android install.
