My eSIM is stuck on "Activating" โ how to fix
If your eSIM has been showing "Activating" for more than 5 minutes, it's stuck. The activation server normally completes the handshake in 30-60 seconds. The fix sequence is: toggle airplane mode on and off, wait 60 seconds, restart the phone, then if it's still stuck, delete the eSIM profile and reinstall with a fresh QR code. Most "stuck activating" issues clear within 2-3 minutes of starting these steps.
Below: why eSIMs get stuck, the recovery flow in order from least to most disruptive, and when to email support for a fresh QR.
Why eSIMs get stuck on "Activating"
A few reasons:
1. Weak Wi-Fi or slow internet during install. The activation server needs a reliable connection to push the profile to your phone. If your Wi-Fi drops mid-install, the profile partially downloads and then sits in limbo waiting for the rest.
2. The cell radio hasn't found a tower yet. Even after the profile downloads, your phone has to register the new line on a cellular network. If you're indoors with weak signal, or at home where no partner network is reachable, the registration step hangs.
3. iOS or Android software hiccup. A specific iOS or Android version sometimes has a bug where the activation handler doesn't transition from "downloading profile" to "registered on network." A fresh boot clears the state.
4. The QR code was already used. If you scanned the QR successfully on another device first (or accidentally re-scanned it from a saved copy), the activation server rejects the second attempt. Your phone shows "Activating" while waiting for a response that never comes.
5. Carrier-side outage on the partner network. Rare, but partner networks occasionally have brief activation server issues. New profiles can't register for a few minutes.
Step 1: Toggle airplane mode on and off
The simplest fix. Cycling the radios often resolves the activation handshake:
- Open Control Center (iPhone) or Quick Settings (Android).
- Tap Airplane Mode on. Wait 15 seconds.
- Tap Airplane Mode off.
- Wait 60 seconds.
Watch the eSIM line in Cellular settings. If it transitions from "Activating" to showing the partner carrier's name with signal bars, you're done.
Step 2: Restart the phone
If airplane mode doesn't unstick it:
iPhone:
- iPhone 8 or earlier: hold the side button until "slide to power off." Power off, wait 10 seconds, power on.
- iPhone X or later: hold the side button + volume up until "slide to power off." Same wait.
- Force restart (if normal restart doesn't work): quickly press volume up, quickly press volume down, hold side button until Apple logo appears.
Android:
- Hold the power button until the power menu appears. Tap Restart.
- Force restart on Samsung: hold power + volume down for 10 seconds.
After the phone boots, check Cellular settings. The eSIM should either complete activation or show a clearer error.
Step 3: Re-enter cellular settings and toggle the line
If the eSIM is still labeled "Activating" after a restart:
- Open Settings โ Cellular (or SIM manager on Android).
- Tap the Eflexsim line.
- Toggle Turn On This Line off. Wait 5 seconds.
- Toggle it back on.
This forces the phone to retry registration without doing a full reinstall. Sometimes the activation step completes cleanly on this retry.
Step 4: Delete and reinstall with a fresh QR
If steps 1-3 don't work, the profile itself is likely corrupted or the original QR is consumed. Delete and reinstall:
- Settings โ Cellular โ tap the Eflexsim line โ scroll to Remove eSIM โ confirm.
- Email support@eflexsim.com with your order number. Ask for a fresh QR code; mention the stuck-activation issue.
- We re-issue within 4 hours (usually faster during business hours).
- When you receive the new QR, install per iPhone install or Android install.
The original plan stays valid. Issuing a fresh QR doesn't reset your plan time or charge anything new.
Step 5: If it's still stuck after a fresh QR
This is rare and suggests something unusual. Two final checks:
- Phone compatibility. Confirm your phone has eSIM hardware: dial
*#06#and look for an EID. If no EID, the phone can't run eSIM. - Carrier lock. Check Settings โ General โ About โ Carrier Lock (iPhone) or contact your carrier (Android). A locked phone may refuse third-party eSIM installs even with a fresh QR.
If both check out and a fresh QR still gets stuck, email support@eflexsim.com with:
- Your order number.
- Phone make, model, OS version (Settings โ General โ About on iPhone, or Settings โ About phone on Android).
- A description of what step you got stuck at (e.g., "Activating for 15 minutes after fresh QR install on iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 18.2, on home Wi-Fi").
We escalate to the partner network for a deeper check. Usually resolves within 24 hours.
What "stuck activating" should look like vs an actual error
iPhone and Android show different status messages depending on what's actually happening:
- "Activating". Profile downloaded, waiting for network registration. Normal for 30-60 seconds; stuck if longer.
- "Setting up cellular plan". Profile is still downloading. Normal for 10-30 seconds; stuck if longer.
- "Could not activate cellular plan". Explicit error. The profile failed. Try the fresh QR step.
- "No service" with the line installed but inactive. Different problem. See my eSIM has no signal.
- Line removed automatically from Cellular settings. Install failed and the partial profile was discarded. Restart and reinstall.
Knowing which status you're seeing helps target the fix. Stuck activating is specifically the "I scanned the QR, profile is downloaded, but registration isn't completing" state.
Frequently asked questions
QWill I lose plan time while it's stuck?
No. The plan timer doesn't start until first successful connection to a partner network. Stuck activation doesn't count as a connection. Your plan time isn't consumed.
QDo I need to be abroad for activation to complete?
For Eflexsim travel plans, yes. The partner network has to be reachable, which usually means you have to be in the destination country. If you're trying to activate at home in a country your plan doesn't cover, the install can complete (profile downloads) but the activation handshake will sit waiting because no partner tower exists locally. Wait until you land to complete activation.
QCan I cancel and refund a stuck-activating eSIM?
Yes, if you can't get it to activate at all and you haven't successfully used it. Request a refund per our refund policy. Within 14 days of purchase and pre-activation.
QMy eSIM activated on iPhone but is stuck activating on my Android (I tried both).
This is consistent with the QR being consumed during the first install. The QR is single-use. Once it works on one device, attempts on other devices fail. The iPhone install used the QR; the Android attempt is stuck because there's nothing left to install. Pick one device to use the eSIM on.
QShould I keep my Wi-Fi on during activation?
Yes. The activation handshake needs an internet connection. Wi-Fi is the most reliable choice. Once activated, the eSIM uses cellular for its own data. Wi-Fi was only needed during the initial install.
QWill updating iOS / Android fix the issue?
Sometimes. If your phone is more than 1-2 major OS versions behind, updating to the latest can fix install bugs. Most modern phones are on recent versions automatically.
For installs that fail with a specific error message rather than getting stuck, see QR code won't scan, "This code is no longer valid", or Android couldn't activate eSIM.
