Troubleshooting

Mobile data won't switch to my eSIM when I land

4 min readUpdated May 11, 2026Verified

If you've landed at your destination and your phone still uses your home cellular line for data instead of switching to your Eflexsim eSIM, the most common causes are: the data line is still set to your home SIM, the Eflexsim eSIM is installed but turned off, or your phone's "Allow cellular data switching" feature isn't enabled (this auto-selects the line with better signal). To fix, go to Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Cellular Data and manually select the Eflexsim line. Most cases resolve in under a minute.

Below: the per-platform fix, why phones don't always auto-switch, and how to set this up before your next trip.

What's happening

Modern phones can have multiple cellular lines installed (home SIM + travel eSIM). But only one is the "active data line" at any time. The data line decides which network handles your internet traffic.

When you land in a new country:

  • If the data line is your home SIM, internet routes through home-carrier roaming (often expensive or not working).
  • If the data line is the Eflexsim eSIM, internet routes through the local partner network (what you wanted).

The data line doesn't automatically switch when you land. You either need to switch it manually or have your phone's auto-switching feature enabled.

Fix 1: Manually set Eflexsim as the data line

iPhone:

  1. Settings โ†’ Cellular.
  2. Tap Cellular Data (near the top of the page).
  3. Confirm Eflexsim is selected with a checkmark.
  4. If not, tap the Eflexsim line.
  5. Optionally enable Allow Cellular Data Switching below (lets the phone fall back to your home line if Eflexsim drops).

Android:

  1. Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ SIMs.
  2. Tap Mobile data preference or similar.
  3. Select Eflexsim.

The data line switch happens instantly. Apps connect through Eflexsim from this point.

Fix 2: Make sure the eSIM line is turned ON

Even if Eflexsim is selected as the data line, if the line itself is OFF, your phone falls back to your home line.

iPhone:

  1. Settings โ†’ Cellular.
  2. Tap the Eflexsim line.
  3. Toggle Turn On This Line to ON.

Android:

  1. Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ SIMs.
  2. Tap the Eflexsim entry.
  3. Toggle the line ON.

This sometimes gets flipped off accidentally during travel.

Fix 3: Wait for cellular registration

A subtler issue: the eSIM is selected and turned on, but the phone hasn't yet registered with the partner network in your new country.

Symptoms:

  • Eflexsim line shows "Searching..." or "No Service" briefly.
  • Status bar shows your home carrier as connected while Eflexsim isn't.
  • After a minute or two, Eflexsim picks up signal.

This is normal on landing. Wait 2-5 minutes after disabling airplane mode for cellular registration to complete. Most phones handle this transparently; some show the registration delay.

If Eflexsim shows "No Service" for more than 5 minutes after airplane mode is off:

Fix 4: Enable cellular data switching for fallback

iPhone has a feature called "Allow Cellular Data Switching" that lets the phone auto-fall-back to your other line if the primary data line loses signal.

For travel use, this is helpful in some cases but problematic in others:

  • Helpful: if Eflexsim briefly loses signal in a tunnel, your home line takes over for a moment so apps keep working.
  • Problematic: if Eflexsim signal is weak, your phone may switch to your home line and use expensive roaming without telling you.

If you've explicitly turned cellular data OFF on your home line (recommended for international trips), this feature can't hurt because there's nothing to fall back to.

iPhone: Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Cellular Data โ†’ Allow Cellular Data Switching โ†’ toggle as you prefer.

Before your next trip: set this up at home

A few minutes of pre-trip setup saves friction on landing:

1. Install the Eflexsim eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. Before flying, scan the QR and let the eSIM install. See iPhone install or Android install.

2. Set the Eflexsim line to be the data line. Even before activation, you can set the preference. The eSIM connects when you land.

3. Turn off cellular data on your home line. Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ home line โ†’ Cellular Data โ†’ off. Prevents accidental home-carrier roaming.

4. Keep WiFi Calling on for your home line. So you can still receive calls and SMS to your home number over data. See WiFi calling and your eSIM: avoiding conflicts.

When you land, you may not need to touch anything. The eSIM activates (often automatically), your phone is already set to use it as the data line, and home-line roaming is disabled so nothing accidentally racks up charges.

For activation timing details, see when to activate.

What if Eflexsim line is on but data still uses home line

A few last things to check:

1. Look at the cellular icon. It usually shows next to the carrier name. The line with the data icon (4G/5G next to it) is the active data line. If the data icon is next to your home line, the data line preference didn't actually save. Re-do Fix 1.

2. Restart the phone. Sometimes a setting change doesn't fully take effect until restart.

3. Reset network settings as a last resort. iPhone: Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ†’ Reset โ†’ Reset Network Settings. Warning: this also clears saved Wi-Fi passwords. Use only if other fixes haven't worked.

Frequently asked questions

QShould my phone auto-switch when I land?

It depends. The Eflexsim line connecting on its own is automatic, but the data line preference doesn't auto-switch. You need to set Eflexsim as preferred either before or after landing.

QWill my home line get charged for roaming if I forget to disable cellular data on it?

Possibly, depending on your home plan. T-Mobile in the US covers international data for free on many plans. Most other US and EU carriers charge per MB at rates that add up fast. Disable cellular data on your home line as a precaution.

QCan I use both lines for data at the same time?

No. Only one line is the active data line at any moment. They alternate as you switch the preference.

QWhat if I'm in airplane mode the whole flight โ€” does data switch automatically when airplane mode comes off?

When airplane mode disables, all cellular lines try to register. The line set as your data line becomes active for data. So if Eflexsim was the preferred data line before takeoff, it's the data line on landing.

QWhy does my phone keep switching back to home cellular?

Check whether "Allow Cellular Data Switching" is on. If yes, the phone may switch when Eflexsim signal weakens. Disable that toggle or disable cellular data on your home line entirely.

QCan I just remove my home SIM before traveling?

You can remove it, yes. Removes the possibility of accidental roaming. But you also lose the ability to receive calls and SMS to your home number unless you've set up WiFi calling with another method.

For data-line selection details, see choosing the default voice and data line on iOS. For Wi-Fi calling, see WiFi calling and your eSIM: avoiding conflicts. For arrival activation, see how to activate your eSIM the moment you land.
