How to activate your eSIM the moment you land
When you land, the sequence is: airplane mode off, wait 30 seconds for your home line to find a tower, toggle the Eflexsim line on, turn data roaming on for that line, set Eflexsim as the data line. The whole flow takes about two minutes and you can do it while waiting for your luggage. Within a minute or so after the last step, Eflexsim shows up as your active data connection and your apps start working through the new plan.
Below: the exact steps for iPhone and Android, what to check if data doesn't start flowing, and the order of operations that avoids common arrival glitches.
Before you get off the plane
Two things help if you do them in your seat during descent:
- Confirm the Eflexsim eSIM is still showing in your Cellular or SIM settings. Should be. Installation is permanent. But worth a glance.
- Verify your phone is still in airplane mode. Cabin announcements sometimes prompt people to disable it early. Wait until you're at the gate.
If you're a nervous flyer or just want to land knowing the activation will go smoothly, this 10-second check at descent gives you confidence.
On iPhone, at the gate or while collecting bags
- Turn off Airplane Mode (Control Center, top right corner toggle).
- Wait 20-30 seconds. Your home line will try to register on a local network first. You may see your home carrier's name with a roaming indicator, "No Service," or the local foreign carrier's name. All are normal.
- Open Settings โ Cellular.
- Tap the Eflexsim line. Toggle Turn On This Line to on.
- Stay on that line's settings. Toggle Data Roaming to on.
- Tap back to the main Cellular screen. Tap Cellular Data. Select Eflexsim.
- Wait 30-60 seconds. Your iPhone registers the eSIM on a partner network. The top status bar shows the partner carrier's name on the Eflexsim line.
- Open Safari or Maps. If a page loads or map tiles download, you're connected.
That's it. Plan timer starts at the moment of first connection (step 7).
On Android, at the gate or while collecting bags
The order is the same; the exact UI varies by manufacturer.
Samsung Galaxy:
- Turn off Airplane mode (Quick Settings panel, top right).
- Wait 20-30 seconds for your home SIM to register on a local network.
- Settings โ Connections โ SIM manager.
- Tap the Eflexsim line. Toggle on.
- Stay on the Eflexsim line's screen. Toggle Data roaming on.
- Back to SIM manager. Under "Preferred SIMs," tap Mobile data and select Eflexsim.
- Wait 30-60 seconds for registration. Status bar shows the partner carrier on the Eflexsim line.
- Open Chrome or Maps to confirm.
Google Pixel:
- Airplane mode off.
- Wait 20-30 seconds.
- Settings โ Network & internet โ SIMs.
- Tap the Eflexsim line. Toggle Use SIM on.
- Toggle Roaming on.
- Tap Mobile data preference in the SIMs screen and select Eflexsim.
- Wait 30-60 seconds and verify with a browser test.
Other Android (OnePlus, Motorola, Oppo, Sony):
Same sequence in the SIM cards or Mobile Network section of Settings. Look for the eSIM listed under your phone's SIM management, toggle it on, enable roaming for it, set it as the mobile data SIM.
What if you don't see data after 5 minutes
Run through this short checklist before contacting support.
1. Data Roaming is on for the Eflexsim line. This is the single most common cause of "I installed but I have no data." Counterintuitively, your phone treats Eflexsim's partner network as "roaming" even though it's the carrier you bought for that specific country.
2. The Eflexsim line is the active data SIM. If your home line is set as the data line, the Eflexsim eSIM is registered but idle. Open Cellular Data settings and confirm Eflexsim is selected.
3. The line is toggled on. It's easy to enable Data Roaming without toggling the line itself on. The line needs both. Toggled on AND data roaming on.
4. You're outside or near a window. Airports' baggage claim and basement areas often have weak cellular signal, even with proper line setup. Step outside or stand near a window for 30 seconds.
5. Try airplane mode off-on. Toggle airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off. This forces the phone to re-register all radios and clears stuck network states.
If none of these work, see the full no signal troubleshooting guide.
A note on Wi-Fi calling for your home line
If your home line had Wi-Fi calling enabled before you flew, it should still work at the airport. Meaning your home phone number can receive calls and SMS over Wi-Fi without you paying any roaming fees on the home line. This is independent of the Eflexsim setup.
If you specifically want your home line to NOT use cellular roaming for any data (saving money on the home plan), explicitly disable Data Roaming on the home line in Cellular settings. With home-line Data Roaming off, the home line stays available for SMS (which works over the cellular control plane without data charges) and Wi-Fi calls, but won't consume your home plan's roaming data accidentally.
Frequently asked questions
QCan I activate before I land. During descent or while taxiing?
You can but probably shouldn't. The first connection during taxi could be to a brief local cellular tower (the airport's), which counts as activation. Wait until you're at the gate and have actually arrived for clean timer-start.
QDoes the cellular icon need to show 4G/5G to confirm activation?
Not necessarily. As long as the Eflexsim line shows the partner carrier's name and signal bars in the status bar, you're activated. The network type (LTE, 4G, 5G) is a separate property based on tower availability.
QMy iPhone keeps showing "Searching..." on the Eflexsim line.
The phone is trying to register. Give it 60 seconds. If still searching after that, toggle airplane mode on/off, or try manual carrier selection: Settings โ Cellular โ Eflexsim line โ Network Selection โ Automatic off โ pick a carrier from the list manually.
QWhat if my flight was delayed and my hotel WiFi is unavailable?
Activate using the airport's free Wi-Fi if available (most major airports have it, registration may be required). Or just rely on the Eflexsim cellular connection once activated. It works the same as any cellular data.
QShould I keep my home SIM active when activating Eflexsim?
Yes. Leaving your home line active lets it receive SMS and 2FA codes through its own roaming connection. This doesn't cost much (SMS roaming is usually included or near-free on most plans) and prevents missed important messages.
QDoes the timer start exactly when I tap "Turn On This Line"?
No. It starts the moment your phone first connects to a partner network after enabling the line. That's usually 30-60 seconds after the toggle. The connection moment is logged by the partner network and is the source of truth for billing.
For pre-arrival prep, see activate before your flight. If activation fails or you have signal issues, see my eSIM has no signal. For the timing math (how plan days are calculated from the moment of activation), see how long does my data plan last.
