Local, regional, or global โ€” which plan should I pick?

4 min readUpdated May 11, 2026Verified

The decision comes down to one question: are you staying in one country, traveling within one region, or hopping across continents? Local plans are the cheapest by far and work great for a single country. Regional plans cost more but follow you across a continent. Global plans are the most expensive per gigabyte but they work in 100+ countries on the same eSIM, so you never need to swap.

Most travelers do best with a local plan. The exceptions are explained below.

Quick decision guide

A one-line rule for each type:

  • Local: one country, one trip. The cheapest per GB. Buy this unless you have a reason not to.
  • Regional: 2-3 countries in the same region (Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America). One plan, no swapping.
  • Global: 4+ countries, mixed regions, or you don't know where you'll end up. Premium pricing.

Local plans. When one country is enough

If you're going to Italy for a week, buy an Italy plan. If you're going to Japan for two weeks, buy a Japan plan. The math almost always favors local plans for single-country trips.

Why local is cheapest: Eflexsim's wholesale cost for a Japan eSIM running on a Japanese partner network is much lower than a global eSIM that has to be valid on 100+ networks at once. We pass that difference through.

Local plans also tend to have the highest data caps for the price. A 30 GB Italy plan typically costs about the same as a 10 GB Europe regional plan. If you're staying put and you want generous data, local is the move.

Local doesn't work for you if:

  • You're crossing borders (you'd need to switch to a different plan in the next country).
  • Your trip route isn't decided (a single-country plan is wasted if you end up somewhere else).

Regional plans. Multi-country trips in one area

Regional plans cover groups of nearby countries on one eSIM. The most common groupings:

  • Europe. Typically 30+ countries including the UK, EU members, and several non-EU neighbors.
  • Southeast Asia. Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and others.
  • Latin America. Most of Central and South America from Mexico through Argentina.
  • Middle East & North Africa. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and others.
  • Africa. Coverage varies, often weighted toward East and Southern Africa.

Regional is the right call when your trip touches multiple countries in the same area and you don't want the overhead of swapping eSIMs at each border. A two-week trip through Italy, Spain, and France with a single Europe regional plan is way smoother than buying three separate local plans.

The trade-off: regional plans cost roughly 1.5-2x what a single-country plan would cost for the same data. If you spend most of your time in one country and just dip into a neighbor for a day or two, a local plan plus the day-trip's worth of roaming may still be cheaper.

Global plans. Long trips, multiple regions, frequent travelers

Global plans work in 100+ countries on a single eSIM. Buy once, use everywhere. No swapping between regions.

Global makes sense for:

  • A round-the-world trip that crosses continents.
  • Business travelers who don't know which city is next.
  • Travelers who hate logistics and want one plan that just works.

The catch is price. Global plans cost more per GB than regional or local. For a 30-day trip to two European countries, a Europe regional plan is almost always a better deal than a global plan. For a 30-day trip that crosses Europe, Asia, and Africa, a global plan is usually worth it.

Three common trip examples and what we'd pick

Two weeks in Italy. Local Italy plan. The Europe regional plan would also work, but you're paying for coverage in 30 other countries you won't visit. The local plan is typically 30-40% cheaper for the same data.

A 10-day trip: London โ†’ Paris โ†’ Amsterdam. Europe regional plan. Three countries means buying three local plans (more eSIMs to install, more bills, more setup time). The regional plan handles all three with one install.

Five weeks: Mexico City โ†’ Lima โ†’ Buenos Aires โ†’ Cape Town โ†’ Bangkok. Global plan. The trip touches Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Three separate regional plans would cost more than one global plan, and you'd need to install three eSIMs (which means three QR codes to keep straight).

Frequently asked questions

QCan I use a global plan in my home country?

Most Eflexsim plans don't work in your home country (the country tied to your billing address). The eSIM is a travel product, so it's designed to activate on partner networks abroad. If you need data at home, your regular carrier is the right tool.

QWhat if I buy a regional plan and travel to a country that's not on the list?

The eSIM won't connect outside the covered countries. Your phone will keep looking for a network but won't find one. The fix is either to switch to your home line for that leg, or buy a separate plan for the uncovered country.

QCan I switch between plan types mid-trip?

You can buy a second eSIM and install it as an additional line. Switch between them in your phone's cellular settings. The old plan keeps its remaining time and data if you go back to it.

QIs the per-GB price really that different?

Yes, often by 2-3x at the extremes. Local plans in popular destinations (Italy, Japan, Thailand) tend to be the best per-GB value in our catalog. Global plans are the most expensive because of how the wholesale network agreements work.

QMy trip is short and I'm only crossing one border. What's the move?

If 80%+ of your time is in one country, buy that country's local plan and just live with a few hours of no data when you cross. If you'll spend roughly equal time in two countries, the regional plan is worth the price.
