iMessage and FaceTime not working with your eSIM
If iMessage or FaceTime stop working after you install an Eflexsim eSIM, the cause is usually that iOS is trying to activate them on the eSIM's phone number (which isn't a real number; travel eSIMs are data-only). The fix is to ensure iMessage and FaceTime are tied to your home phone number and email address (via your Apple Account), not the Eflexsim line. Go to Settings โ Messages โ Send & Receive and confirm only your home number and Apple ID email are checked. If iMessage activation is stuck, toggle it off, turn off the Eflexsim line briefly, re-enable iMessage, then re-enable the Eflexsim line.
Below: how the conflict happens, the per-setting fix, and what to do when iMessage just refuses to activate.
Why this happens
iMessage and FaceTime are tied to a phone number, an Apple ID email, or both. When you install a new cellular line, iOS asks the line for its phone number and tries to enable iMessage/FaceTime on it.
Travel eSIMs are usually data-only (no voice or SMS), so they either:
- Have no phone number assigned, OR
- Have a temporary "system" number that's not user-facing.
iOS gets confused trying to activate iMessage on this non-number. Symptoms:
- iMessage shows "Waiting for activation..." indefinitely.
- iMessage messages send as green-bubble SMS instead of blue-bubble iMessage.
- FaceTime calls fail to ring through.
- "iMessage activation failed" alerts appear.
Fix 1: Ensure iMessage uses your home number and email, not Eflexsim
The cleanest fix is to remove the Eflexsim line from iMessage/FaceTime's "send and receive" addresses.
iMessage:
- Settings โ Messages.
- Make sure iMessage is toggled ON.
- Tap Send & Receive.
- Under "You can be reached by iMessage at," uncheck the Eflexsim line (if it appears).
- Confirm your home phone number and Apple ID email are checked.
- Under "Start new conversations from," select your home number or email.
FaceTime:
- Settings โ FaceTime.
- Under "You can be reached by FaceTime at," uncheck the Eflexsim line.
- Confirm your home number and email are checked.
- Under "Caller ID," select your home number or email.
After these changes, iMessage and FaceTime ignore the Eflexsim line entirely.
Fix 2: If iMessage is stuck "Waiting for activation"
If iMessage refuses to activate at all (won't show any phone numbers under Send & Receive):
- Settings โ Messages โ toggle iMessage OFF.
- Settings โ FaceTime โ toggle FaceTime OFF.
- Settings โ Cellular โ tap Eflexsim line โ toggle Turn On This Line OFF temporarily.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Settings โ Messages โ toggle iMessage ON.
- Settings โ FaceTime โ toggle FaceTime ON.
- Wait 1-5 minutes for activation to complete on your home line.
- Once activation completes (Send & Receive shows your home number), turn the Eflexsim line back ON.
This forces iMessage to activate against your home line only, then bring the Eflexsim line back as a data-only line that doesn't participate in iMessage.
Fix 3: Sign out and back in to Apple Account
If iMessage and FaceTime are still confused:
- Settings โ top of page (your name) โ Sign Out.
- Confirm sign-out.
- Wait 1 minute.
- Sign back in to your Apple Account.
- Re-enable iMessage and FaceTime.
Use this if other fixes haven't worked. Note: signing out of Apple Account temporarily affects iCloud, Find My, etc. Wait until you're on a stable Wi-Fi connection before doing this if possible.
Fix 4: Check the date and time
iMessage activation depends on correct date and time. If your phone's clock is wildly wrong (sometimes happens when traveling across time zones with auto-time off), iMessage activation fails.
iPhone:
- Settings โ General โ Date & Time.
- Toggle Set Automatically ON.
- Confirm the time zone and time look correct.
When you're abroad and SMS-based 2FA stops working
iMessage with the home number works abroad via WiFi calling or Apple's own iMessage routing (over data). But SMS-based 2FA from banks, services, etc. uses your home carrier's actual SMS, which may not work abroad unless WiFi calling is enabled.
If you're missing SMS codes:
- Enable WiFi Calling on your home line. See WiFi calling and your eSIM: avoiding conflicts.
- Use authenticator apps instead of SMS for 2FA where possible.
- Set up Google Voice or another VoIP service for SMS forwarding.
This isn't an iMessage issue per se; iMessage works fine over data. It's an SMS issue that affects accounts using SMS for 2FA.
FaceTime audio specifically
FaceTime audio (audio-only calls to another Apple user) works over data without needing a phone number activation per se. It works on the Eflexsim line as long as:
- FaceTime is enabled in Settings โ FaceTime.
- Your Apple ID email is checked under "You can be reached."
- The Eflexsim line has working data.
Friends calling your FaceTime can use your Apple ID email instead of phone number to reach you. This is a reliable way to stay reachable abroad even without WiFi calling.
Group iMessage chats
A common bug: when you install a new eSIM, you sometimes get spammed with old group iMessage threads being "re-sent" to you, or messages from the group come in as SMS instead of iMessage. This usually resolves within 1-2 hours as iMessage re-syncs.
If group threads stay broken:
- Open the broken group thread.
- Tap the group name at the top โ group info.
- Verify all participants are showing as iMessage (blue) not SMS (green).
- If split, try removing yourself from the group and being re-added by another member.
Frequently asked questions
QWill iMessage still work over my Eflexsim data?
Yes. iMessage routes over whatever data connection is active. Eflexsim's data carries iMessage traffic the same as Wi-Fi or your home line's roaming would.
QWhy are my messages green-bubble instead of blue-bubble?
iMessage is failing to activate or has fallen back to SMS. Apply Fix 2 to force re-activation.
QWill my home phone number still receive iMessages while I'm abroad?
Yes, as long as iMessage is activated on your home line. The phone number stays valid in Apple's iMessage system regardless of where the phone physically is.
QDoes my Eflexsim plan have a phone number I can give to friends?
Most travel eSIMs don't include a callable phone number. They're data-only. Use your home number (via WiFi calling) or your FaceTime/iMessage with email contact for friends to reach you.
QWhy does FaceTime audio work but FaceTime video doesn't?
FaceTime video needs more bandwidth. If your Eflexsim signal is weak or congested, video may fail while audio works. Test from a stronger signal location.
QDo I need to re-activate iMessage every time I land in a new country?
No, once it's set up properly with your home number as the iMessage identity. iMessage continues to work as long as Apple Account is signed in and data is available.
For WiFi calling setup, see WiFi calling and your eSIM: avoiding conflicts. For data line selection, see choosing the default voice and data line on iOS. For broader connection issues, see data is on but apps won't connect.
