My personal hotspot won't share eSIM data

4 min readUpdated May 11, 2026Verified

If your personal hotspot won't share Eflexsim eSIM data with other devices, the most common causes are: personal hotspot is disabled in the cellular line settings (separate from the device-wide toggle), the wrong cellular line is selected as the data source for hotspot, the partner network doesn't permit tethering on roaming plans, or the connecting device has cached old network settings. Most travelers fix this in 5 minutes by checking the line-specific hotspot toggle in cellular settings.

Below: the per-platform fix in detail, what to do when hotspot is permitted but slow, and which countries or plans restrict tethering.

What "hotspot not working" usually looks like

The symptom: your phone is connected to the Eflexsim eSIM and apps work on the phone. You turn on personal hotspot and connect your laptop to it. The laptop sees the Wi-Fi network, connects, but no internet flows.

Or: hotspot worked initially but stopped after a few minutes.

Or: hotspot works for one device but not another.

These all share a common root: the data path from your phone's eSIM to the connected device is broken somewhere.

Fix 1: Confirm hotspot is enabled at the cellular line level

Most travelers turn on personal hotspot at the device level (Settings โ†’ Personal Hotspot โ†’ toggle on). But there's a separate toggle per cellular line that says whether THAT line can be used as the hotspot source.

iPhone:

  1. Settings โ†’ Cellular.
  2. Tap the Eflexsim line.
  3. Scroll to find Personal Hotspot (line-specific toggle).
  4. Confirm it's ON.

Android:

  1. Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ SIMs.
  2. Tap Eflexsim line.
  3. Look for Mobile hotspot allowed on this line or similar.
  4. Confirm enabled.

Both line-level and device-level toggles need to be on for hotspot to actually share the eSIM's data.

Fix 2: Confirm the data line is set to Eflexsim

If you have multiple lines (home SIM + Eflexsim), the hotspot uses whichever line is set as the "data" line. If your home SIM is the data line but doesn't have international data, hotspot fails even though the toggle is on.

iPhone:

  1. Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Cellular Data โ†’ confirm Eflexsim is the selected line.

Android:

  1. Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ SIMs โ†’ Mobile data preference โ†’ confirm Eflexsim selected.

See choosing the default voice and data line on iOS for more on data-line selection.

Fix 3: Check if your plan permits tethering

Most Eflexsim plans permit personal hotspot use, treating tethered data the same as on-device data. A few exceptions:

  • Some unlimited plans restrict tethering to a smaller cap (e.g., unlimited on-device, 5 GB hotspot per day).
  • Specific country partner networks sometimes restrict tethering on roaming traffic, even when permitted on-device.
  • High-volume tethering may trigger fair-use throttling on some plans after a daily threshold.

Check your plan's details page for "Hotspot/Tethering" notes. If tethering isn't supported, the toggle may simply not work or the data may drop after a few minutes.

For unlimited plan specifics, see do you offer unlimited data eSIM plans.

Fix 4: Restart hotspot and reconnect

A common stuck-state issue: you turned hotspot on once, it worked, then later it doesn't. Fix:

  1. Turn personal hotspot OFF.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Turn personal hotspot ON.
  4. On the connecting device, "forget" the hotspot Wi-Fi network and reconnect with the new password if asked.
  5. Test internet on the connecting device.

This clears any stale Wi-Fi negotiation state.

Fix 5: Verify the password and SSID

If the connecting device can't even see the hotspot Wi-Fi or fails to authenticate:

  1. On your phone, note the exact hotspot name (usually your phone's name) and password.
  2. On the connecting device, "forget" the network if you've connected to it before.
  3. Reconnect using the exact password.

Capitalization matters in Wi-Fi passwords. Watch for similar-looking characters (0 vs O, 1 vs l).

Fix 6: Toggle airplane mode on the phone

A full network state reset:

  1. Turn on airplane mode (this disconnects everything including hotspot).
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Turn off airplane mode.
  4. Wait for cellular to reconnect (signal bars return).
  5. Turn personal hotspot ON.
  6. Reconnect from the other device.

When hotspot works but is slow

If hotspot connects and works but speeds are noticeably slower than on-device usage, a few causes:

1. Bandwidth split. Cellular bandwidth is finite. Tethering inherently shares it between your phone and the connecting device.

2. Wi-Fi limitation. Phone hotspot Wi-Fi is typically 2.4 GHz (slower) by default. Some phones offer 5 GHz hotspot which is faster but shorter range.

3. Network throttling. Some partner networks throttle tethered traffic separately from on-device traffic. Faster on-device, slower on-tether.

4. Phone CPU bottleneck. Older phones struggle to NAT/route fast traffic from hotspot. Newer phones handle it better.

Hotspot on specific phones

A few platform-specific notes:

iPhone:

  • Personal Hotspot is on by default for most carriers but can be hidden if the carrier file doesn't include the feature. Eflexsim plans usually enable it.
  • "Maximize Compatibility" toggle (under Personal Hotspot settings) switches to 2.4 GHz only, which improves compatibility with older devices but is slower.

Samsung Galaxy:

  • Settings โ†’ Connections โ†’ Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
  • Galaxy has separate toggles for Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth tethering, and USB tethering.

Google Pixel:

  • Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ Hotspot & tethering.

Other Android:

  • Usually under Connections, Mobile networks, or Network & internet. Look for "Hotspot" or "Tethering."

Hotspot data counts against your plan

Tethered data uses the same plan as your on-device data. There's no separate "hotspot allowance" on most plans; it all comes from the same pool.

If you tether a laptop and stream video for an hour, that 1-2 GB of data subtracts from your eSIM plan's total. See how much data do I actually need for my trip for typical usage estimates including tethering.

Frequently asked questions

QDoes my Eflexsim plan permit hotspot use?

Most plans yes. Check the plan details page for "Hotspot/Tethering" notes. If unclear, email support before relying on it for important work.

QWhy does hotspot work for one device but not another?

Usually the failing device has cached old Wi-Fi settings. Forget the hotspot network on that device and reconnect.

QCan I tether my laptop for work?

Yes, on most plans. For all-day work usage, pick a plan with enough data (10+ GB for a workday) or unlimited. See esim vs international roaming.

QDoes Bluetooth tethering work better than Wi-Fi?

Slower (Bluetooth maxes around 2 Mbps) but uses less battery. Good for light browsing on a tablet, not for video.

QCan I tether to my smartwatch?

Most smartwatches don't connect via hotspot. They use Bluetooth to your phone instead. For Apple Watch eSIM specifically, see does Eflexsim work on Apple Watch.

QWhy does hotspot disconnect when my phone screen turns off?

Some phones have battery-saving features that pause hotspot when the screen is off for a while. Keep the phone screen on or change the setting.

For broader signal issues, see my eSIM has no signal. For tethering on smartwatches, the Apple Watch eSIM article covers the alternative path.
