How to check if your phone is carrier-unlocked

5 min readUpdated May 11, 2026Verified

If your phone is locked to your home carrier, a third-party eSIM like Eflexsim won't install. Your phone refuses to accept the profile because the carrier hasn't authorized it. To check on iPhone: Settings โ†’ General โ†’ About โ†’ Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions," you're unlocked. On Samsung Galaxy and Pixel, the lock status lives in a similar Settings location, though the path varies. Most phones bought outright (full retail price) are unlocked from day one; phones bought on contract or installment plans through a US carrier are usually locked until the device is paid off.

Below: how to verify the lock status on iPhone and Android, how to request an unlock from your carrier, and what to do if your phone turns out to be locked after you've already bought a plan.

What "carrier-locked" actually means

A carrier-locked phone has a software flag set in firmware that restricts it to a specific carrier's network. The flag is set by the carrier (not the manufacturer) when they sell you a phone on a payment plan or contract.

What it blocks:

  • Installing a third-party eSIM (including Eflexsim).
  • Using a physical SIM from a different carrier.
  • Accepting a foreign carrier's roaming connection in some cases.

What it doesn't block:

  • Calls, SMS, and data on your home carrier's network. The lock doesn't affect normal use with your home carrier.
  • Wi-Fi connectivity. Wi-Fi is independent of cellular and never affected by carrier lock.
  • The phone's eSIM hardware itself. The embedded chip exists; it's just been restricted via firmware.

The lock can be removed (called "unlocking") in a few ways, but the cleanest is asking your home carrier to do it for you. Most major carriers unlock within 24 hours if you meet their criteria.

How to check if your iPhone is unlocked

iPhone makes this easy:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General โ†’ About.
  3. Scroll down to Carrier Lock.

You'll see one of two messages:

  • "No SIM restrictions". Your iPhone is unlocked. Eflexsim will install without issue.
  • "SIM locked" (or a carrier name like "AT&T," "Verizon," "T-Mobile"). Your iPhone is locked to that carrier. You'll need to unlock before installing a third-party eSIM.

If the Carrier Lock row doesn't appear at all, you're on an older iOS version where Apple hadn't added this field yet. Update iOS or use the alternative methods below.

How to check if your Android phone is unlocked

Android varies more by manufacturer and carrier.

Samsung Galaxy:

  1. Dial *#7465625*638*# (might not work on all variants).
  2. Or: Settings โ†’ About phone โ†’ Status โ†’ SIM card status.

If a "Network unlock" or "SIM card lock status" entry says "Unlocked," you're set. If it shows your home carrier or "Locked," you need to unlock first.

Google Pixel:

  1. Insert a SIM from a different carrier (if you have one available). Pixel won't show an explicit unlock status in Settings, but it will refuse to use a foreign carrier's SIM if locked.
  2. Or: contact your carrier directly to ask. Pixel's lock status isn't exposed in plain English in Settings.

Other Android (OnePlus, Motorola, Oppo, Sony):

The path varies. The most reliable check is contacting your home carrier and asking, "Is my device unlocked?" Most carrier support agents can tell you instantly.

How to request an unlock from major carriers

Most US carriers will unlock if you meet basic criteria. Usually that the device is paid off, your account is in good standing, and you've had the phone for at least 60 days.

T-Mobile: Settings โ†’ General โ†’ About โ†’ look for unlock status. If locked, T-Mobile's "Device Unlock" app (pre-installed on T-Mobile phones) requests an unlock. Most happen within 24 hours.

AT&T: Visit att.com/deviceunlock. Fill in your phone's IMEI and account details. AT&T processes the request within 2-3 business days for paid-off devices.

Verizon: Verizon phones bought after 2020 unlock automatically after 60 days of activation on a Verizon account. Older phones may need a manual request via 1-800-922-0204.

UK carriers (EE, Vodafone, O2, Three): Each carrier's website has an unlock request form. Most charge a small fee (ยฃ10-20) and process within 7-10 working days.

Other countries: Carriers vary widely. The general pattern is "contact customer service, ask for an unlock, meet their criteria." Some EU carriers unlock for free; some charge.

After an unlock is processed, you usually need to restart the phone with a different SIM (or the same SIM) for the unlock to take effect. iPhone often requires a factory reset to finalize. Back up first.

What to do if your phone is locked and you've already bought a plan

If you bought an Eflexsim plan, tried to install, and the install failed because your phone is locked:

  1. Don't try to install repeatedly. Each failed install attempt can consume your single-use QR code. Stop after the first or second failure.
  2. Request the unlock from your carrier. Use the steps above for your specific carrier.
  3. Wait for the unlock to take effect. This is usually 24 hours to a week depending on carrier.
  4. Email support@eflexsim.com and let us know you need a fresh QR code after the unlock is complete. We re-issue at no charge if the original QR was burned by failed install attempts.
  5. If you can't unlock in time for your trip, we'll refund the plan under our 14-day refund policy as long as you haven't activated the eSIM successfully.

The fastest path is to test the lock status BEFORE buying. Settings โ†’ About โ†’ Carrier Lock takes 30 seconds and prevents the whole problem.

A note on second-hand phones

If you bought your phone used (eBay, Swappa, a friend), it might be unlocked even if the original buyer had it locked. Sellers sometimes unlock before selling; carriers sometimes auto-unlock after a phone is reported as resold. Check the actual Settings status. Don't assume based on what the previous owner says.

If a used phone is still locked to the previous owner's carrier and you don't have access to that account, your options are limited. You might be able to get a third-party unlock service to do it (paid, not always reliable, sometimes against the carrier's terms). The cleanest path is to ask the seller to handle the unlock before transferring the device.

Frequently asked questions

QAre SIM-free phones automatically unlocked?

Yes. Phones sold "SIM-free" (Apple's direct retail, the Google Store, Samsung.com direct) are unlocked from the factory and stay unlocked permanently. The lock only applies to phones sold through a carrier on a payment plan.

QDoes jailbreaking or rooting unlock my phone?

No. Jailbreaking and rooting modify the operating system, but the carrier lock lives in firmware below the OS. Jailbreaking has nothing to do with unlocking.

QCan a third-party service unlock my phone?

Sometimes, yes. Paid unlock services exist (cost: $20-100). Quality varies. Some work reliably for older devices, others are scams. For modern iPhones especially, third-party unlocks are usually unreliable; carrier-authorized unlocks are the only sure path.

QWill unlocking void my warranty?

Carrier-authorized unlocks (the kind you get by asking your carrier) don't void warranty. Third-party unlocks that involve software modification can void warranty in some cases, depending on the manufacturer's policy.

QMy phone is locked but works on Wi-Fi. Can I still use Eflexsim somehow?

You can use the phone over Wi-Fi at hotels and cafes without any cellular eSIM. Eflexsim won't install while locked, but the phone still works in airplane mode + Wi-Fi. Limited but workable for short trips. The better solution is unlock.

QWhat if my phone is "leased" rather than financed?

Leased phones (some T-Mobile JUMP! plans, some carrier subscription services) often have stricter unlock policies because the phone technically isn't yours. The carrier may refuse to unlock until the lease ends and you buy out the device. Check your specific carrier's lease terms.
